Sadly, the concert on May 11th 2014 was the last in the history of KMS. Since 1980 we have arranged 180 chamber concerts: solo piano; duos with violin, cello, viola, clarinet, tuba; string trio, piano trio; string quartet; piano quartet; jazz lecture; male vocal ensemble (St John's, Cambridge). All of these were held in the sumptuous surroundings of the Vanbrugh Saloon in the Castle, courtesy of the Headmaster and Governors. The final concert, exceptionally, was staged in the church, which was acoustically preferable and incorporated the organ, as both solo and accompaniment.
The Society was established by the late Philip Dale, Director of Music; it ran from 1960-70, then folded. It was restarted, with the active encouragement of the headmaster, David Donaldson, in 1980. Philip retired from School in 1985, but continued to run KMS. He gave that up in 1994 and asked Ken Laflin to take over. Tonight's concert, coincidentally, is the 100th staged by the present chairman.
The decision to close was hard, but unanimous among the committee. The nucleus of subscribing members has diminished slowly, as the years roll inexorably on. The committee wished at all costs to avoid the chance of starting a new season, uncertain about our ability to pay for the artists we had booked.
We thank all who have supported the society in the past 34 years.
